Brasil fica com título mundial de surfe pela 4ª vez em 6 anos
Gabriel Medina e Italo Ferreira disputam a final entre si
Ainda está em andamento a etapa de Pipeline, no Havaí, que decide a Liga Mundial de Surfe (WSL), mas já se sabe que o campeão será novamente brasileiro. A disputa agora está restrita a Italo Ferreira e Gabriel Medina. O vencedor vai ampliar o domínio recente do Brasil na modalidade.
Será a quarta conquista da “Brazilian Storm”, nome dado à onda verde-amarela no esporte. A “Tempestade Brasileira”, como pode ser traduzida a espécie de apelido coletivo, passará a ter quatro dos últimos seis títulos do circuito masculino.
Medina, que ainda briga pelo tri, foi coroado em 2014 e em 2018. Em 2015, o campeão mundial foi Adriano de Souza, o Mineirinho, mais experiente dos brasileiros na elite, hoje com 32 anos.
Mesmo se o recorte for ampliado para as últimas dez temporadas, ninguém supera o Brasil. Há dois títulos para os Estados Unidos (Kelly Slater, em 2010 e 2011), dois para a Austrália (Joel Parkinson, em 2012, e Mick Fanning, em 2013) e dois para o Havaí (John John Florence, em 2016 e 2017), que na Liga Mundial de Surfe tem bandeira própria.
Desde 2018, os brasileiros são maioria no circuito. Em 2019, dos 34 surfistas fixos da elite, 11 eram do Brasil. A Austrália aparecia em segundo lugar, com oito representantes. Havaí e Estados Unidos, com quatro surfistas cada um, não chegariam ao número brasileiro nem se todos competissem sob a mesma bandeira.
O cenário não será muito diferente em 2020. O número exato ainda depende da conclusão da etapa de Pipeline, mas cinco brasileiros conseguiram permanência na WSL, a primeira divisão, e outros cinco subiram via WQS, a segunda. Ou seja, não há sinais de arrefecimento da “Brazilian Storm”.
A juventude dos principais brasileiros do esporte também deixa aberta a possibilidade de um sucesso duradouro. Italo e Medina, que ficaram até o fim na disputa pelo título, têm 25 anos. Filipe Toledo, que também chegou a Pipeline com chances, tem 24.
Na próxima temporada, além do quinto título mundial, o Brasil tentará estender seu domínio à Olimpíada. Os Jogos de Tóquio serão os primeiros que incluirão o surfe no programa, com a disputa programada para a praia de Tsurigasaki, em Chida, a cerca de 60 quilômetros da capital.
Os representantes do país na competição foram definidos pelo ranking da temporada 2019. Assim, Italo e Medina carregarão a bandeira brasileira no Japão.
